KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs. – If you have little idea on what it takes to nominate a person or organisation for this year’s NSTP-PwC Malaysian Humanitarian Award, it is understandable.

šš Some have the impression that a man who saves a woman from a snatch theft or a woman who gives away money she won to charity or the wealthy who indulge in philanthropy should be nominees. They are but if last year’s winners are anything to go by, the ultimate winners would have committed something with a deeper and more lasting impact, a deed that eyes the long term.

š That said, it is not as easy as it looks. That is why the organisers decided that for nominations to stand scrutiny, they must live and perform by certain fundamental principles.

š To qualify for the three categories, the persons or organisations must have committed a courageous deed that helped someone or some cause, usually on a charitable mission that involved personal sacrifice that went beyond the call of duty.

šš Even this is a tough call. You might want to vote a team or organisation whose chief mission is to help people in distress like police officers or fire fighters. It is their jobs anyway.

šš But don’t let stop you from nominating them.

š There are other principles:

” A commitment to serve others, a generosity of spirit and dedication that improves people’s way of life like better shelter, consistent food on the table, proper clothing, education as high as possible and meaningful employment;

” A meritorious direct "hands-on" participation in an act or operation of a charitable or humanitarian nature that directly benefits people as individuals or communities;

” Outstanding involvement and dedication by significant contribution of volunteer leadership or service which improved or enriched others; and,

” Act of kindness done without thought of reward but generally recognised.

š While the three categories will be judged by the principles above, a nominee for the Lifetime Humanitarian Award must have an extra quality: he or she must have demonstrated their acts or deeds consistently for a minimum 10 years.
