the steve in me...

I was actually viewing Basic Instinct 2 over at Apple's Trailer web site when I thought to myself shouldn't I be more productive ?

Therefore, after viewing the trailer (which Sharon Stone thaught us about aging), i switched to other pages and then suddenly I was thinking of reading more about Apple's employees.

I tried to search for "Apple+employees" but don't really get the desirable search. Then I thought well maybe just search something about "steve job.."

and i found this site about his speech on life to graduates at stanford Universities during 2005. I remember I heard about the story but never quite read the full text.

It is a great speech because it touches on how a person went on to be adopted from his biological parents to college drop-out, keeping afloat a healthy and positive mind, went on the create the first ever GUI-computer and then at the age of 30, being fired and go back to square one. Restarted his life and at another peak, faced death from cancer threat and eventually survived.

A few meaningful quotes which would touch your soul...

On dropping out of college:

"you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future."

"You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

On having nothing to eat:

"I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms. I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with. And I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple."

On hitting rock bottom:

"Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick.

Don't lose faith.

I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did.

You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle."

On Death:

"No one wants to die.

Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life.

It is life's change agent.

It clears out the old to make way for the new."

The most important things:

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.

Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking.

Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.

And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."

The steve in me...

Reflecting that in me... I have had a struggled life.My teenage years was a painful one.Five years back, I was so sick that I thought I was dying, but somehow I survived.and all those bad experiences helped to evolve me into a better human. Wisdoms gained and forgiveness blossoms.Aging as we can't escape it, is a beauty which I am beginning to enjoy. The best way to do this is never allow yourself to be convinced that yesterday was always better then tomorrow. Do u trust this man?Period.

on true love..

I got this from fowarded email..

May all your love be as loving and strong.............

It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 am, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's, arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He stated that he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound.

On exam it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, we began to engage in conversation I asked him if he had a doctor's appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no , that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife.

I then inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer Disease. As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound, I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him. "And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?" He smiled as he patted my hand and said. "She doesn't know me, but I still know who she is."

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, "That is the kind of love I want in my life." True love is neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

Oh, by the way, peace is seeing a sunset and knowing who to thank.

"The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything that comes along their way."

If you want romance, you got it.. ya.

The essence of color is empty one

My friend put this in its MSN's title..

"With more success, comes greater problems along with greater ability to solve them"

This is funny and truthful and it helps to explain the following terms.

色即是空,空即是色!

Everything will go back to zero eventually.

Those with no guts will find it hard to be decisive, one can't keep waiting until the condition has proved it to be ripen when opportunity becomes matured. Those who is successful know it well that opportunity has inherent relationship with speed, perserverence and risk taking. In order to become decisive, one has to grab opportunity and come to conclusion immediately only to follow-up with appropriate action plans.

There is no way that things would be apparent before making the right move. We have to gamble to certain extend because human will never have the luxury of having enough information to decide on.

Rules of thumb are; identify opportunities all the time, be courages, speed up, dare to fail and never let lacking of confidence be the hindrance of the path to success which requires one to be adventurous. Confidence is defined with actions. - Rich Devos (Amway co-founder)

Happy Chinese New 2006

Yet another CNY again.. I felt as if I haven't had enough time to stop for a moment to ponder over life achievement over the past year.

As expected, we would usually be receiving a lot of greetings.. especially in the form of SMS. SMS has taken over any other media form as greetings messages courier, not even email. Perhaps the time is high now for SMS-email hybrid system, with emphasize on information archiving. We would often love to archive information in the form of SMS and if possible making it formalized and thus legalized.

These year, I received a few types of greetings from the SMS medium and two of such top my favourite list.

Favourite 1:
愿您~
狗年开始
鼠钱不完
牛那样壮
虎虎生威
兔气羊眉
龙马精神
蛇得消费
马到工成
羊洋得意
猴会有期

猪你发财

My dream job

I used to be thinking... my plan is to make a big sum of money in the near future and be low-profile forever.

I would be enjoy doing humanitty work like the following:
1. Nurse
2. Therapist
3. Teacher/ Tutor/ Trainer.

Just today, yahoo published USA's 2006 ideal career options.

I am delighted to see that therapist is part of it while software engineer is no where to be seen. I feel this way because at least I would be valid for the future.

Eliminating the Passive Pattern

My brother recently shared this with me..

Eliminating the Passive Pattern
By Barbara Pachter, president of Pachter and Associates, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and author of The Power of Positive Confrontation.November 2000, Purchasing Today®, page 8.
Did you ever wonder what may be holding you back from job advancement? Passive communication patterns may be what's stalling your career.

Business Etiquette:
Jack was the expert. No one else in his department had the same grasp on financial issues as he did. Yet Jack was passed over a second time for a promotion. Finally, his manager told him that until he got rid of his wimpy handshake and nervous giggle, he was not going anywhere in the organization. He was stunned. He didn't even realize that he was doing those things.

Jack is a real person, one of the many supply management professionals with stalled-out careers who are in need of help to break out of what is known as the "passive pattern."
The passive pattern is defined as the failure to present oneself with strength and conviction. Instead of using more polite and powerful behavior, people with the passive pattern use self-defeating communication mannerisms - like the wimpy handshake and the nervous giggle - often without knowing it.

Of course, no one is perfect. We can all have a communication habit that works against us in some small way. The difficulty is when they start adding up, when you have two or more of these behaviors. That's a pattern. It's passive. You look unprofessional.
How do you know if you suffer from the passive pattern? If you do good work but aren't getting promoted, that can be a sign. There are other signs as well - your suggestions don't get taken, your proposals aren't accepted, your ideas go ignored, conflicts aren't resolved, or your orders are not followed.

If this describes the state of your career, tune into your verbal and nonverbal communication habits and look for mistakes.

Eight Areas of Communication to TargetIn addition to the wimpy handshake and the nervous giggle, here are eight more of the most common mistakes that can add up to a career problem for supply managers:

1. Using qualifying words.
These are extra words that are added to sentences that can make even the smartest person sound tentative and unsure. Qualifying words include "kinda," "sorta," "maybe," and "perhaps." "I was kinda, in a way, somewhat sure the materials would arrive on time." Well, were you or weren't you? Remember, if you sound confident, more people are likely to see you as confident. If you discount yourself, it's easy for others to also discount you.
2. Using "I think" when you know.
If you are asked, "What time is the meeting on Monday?" do you answer, "I think the meeting is at 3 p.m." or "The meeting is at 3 p.m."? If you are unsure of the time, you can use "I think." But don't say "I think" when you know. You want to be viewed as a credible source.
3. Speaking too softly.
If your volume is low, it becomes easy not to hear you. You can then become invisible and easy to ignore. Many people have no idea that they speak as softly as they do. A suggestion you could use to detect this pattern would be to tape yourself at various distances from a recorder and then listen to hear if your volume carries.
4. Playing with hands.
It's hard to be taken seriously when you are wringing your hands or twisting paper clips. Clicking pens, twisting rubber bands, twirling mustaches, and fidgeting with glasses are examples of mannerisms that can become distractions that may take away from what is being said by the speaker.
5. Using "I don't know" as extra words.
This is not saying "I don't know" because you truly don't know something. This is using "I don't know" as a way to discount what you have just said: "I suggest we implement the original plan. It's affordable, I don't know… "
6. Standing passively.
Business professionals who stand with their legs crossed, slouch, or fold their arms over their chests don't look open, confident, and professional. They look like they would rather be anywhere else than where they are. Stand assertively. Keep your legs parallel with your shoulders, about three to four inches apart. This does not mean you must stand rigid. Keep your shoulders back, but not way back, and keep your chin straight. Unless you're gesturing, your hands can be at your side.
7. Avoiding eye contact.
In some cultures, too much eye contact is a faux pas, but in the United States, you need to look people in the eye when speaking with them. You may occasionally look away. But if you mostly look away, you can appear nervous or insincere. If a supplier is not looking at you when discussing delivery arrangements, you will have a tendency not to believe that person.
8. Overusing "I'm sorry."
This is apologizing for no reason. One woman says, "It's raining today, I'm sorry," as if it is her fault. One manager says to her customer, "I am sorry to bother you today." Again, if you discount yourself, it's easy for others to also discount you.

Suggested Solutions:
Get feedback every year to discover if you are doing any of the "passive pattern" items. The first step in eliminating any of them is to discover which ones you do. Means of correcting communication mistakes include:

1. Take a good presentation skills class that videotapes you. You need to see and hear what you are doing.
2. Listen to voice mail messages before sending them. Rerecord your messages as necessary to catch qualifying words and other communication mistakes. Five out of the eight communication mistakes can be detected through this practice.
3. Work with a career coach.
4. Ask trusted and qualified friends and colleagues to monitor your communication skills.

Merry Christmas 2005

I like to wish all my friends and family a merry christmas.

This year had been a great year for me personal. I had a lot of development in terms of career, spiritual and self-help.

As it is always a custom to associate a celebration with good news, I have found the following to be interesting.

USA cancer death rate continues to drop.

According to the news, cancer rate has witnessed a steady declined every since 1997; the year asia went into economical crisis. There isn't much of a link here.

However, personally, I have often likened cancer to the mind. If you have a bad soul, chances of contracting cancer would be higher.

Some of my friends who are smoker defended their habit, saying that tobacco don't induce cancer. Based on my theory, it is correct too. However, perhaps the worry of contracting it actually deliver the point.

Bear a healthy mind and soul. If you are perfect, you can't inspire.

inspiration

If you are perfect, you can't inspire.

Thus, things would be okay if you just do it right.
  • No worry that she won't go out with me.
  • No worry that can't get another job.
  • No stress because I can't cover everything.
  • No worry that I am not her type.

If you are perfect, you can't inspire.

Earthquake Prediction for Malaysia

Quake and tsunami predicted in S'pore & M'sia

BANGKOK: Thailand's now iconic meteorologist, Dr Smith Dharmasaroja, who in Year 1998 predicted a killer tsunami would hit Thailand one day & was ignored, said S'pore & M'sia were also in danger from a future earthquake and tsunami. "I believe the epicentre of future quakes will shift northwards, north of the Andaman & Nicobar islands."

"A big earthquake with a more northerly epicentre than the Dec 26 quake will generate a tsunami which will have a more direct route down to the Straits of Malacca, swamping S'pore and M'sia." during the month of december 05' and january 06'.

"As the sea passage narrows, more water will build ! up and the wave will become bigger. S'pore is relatively low-lying & quite flat, and would be badly affected.

Remember,in Dec,the tsunami was 30m high at Banda Aceh. At Khao Lak, it was 16m high," he said."

Dr Smith,70,retired as chief of Thailand's Meteorological Department well before last Dec's disaster. But before that, he had warned first in a speech and then in a memo that Thailand's Andaman coast was at risk from a killer tsunami.

Tragically his warning, although widely reported by the media, was ignored.

Government officials, fearful of tourists staying away, branded him a cranky and dangerous man. The authorities in Phuket castigated him & said he was not welcome to visit. After the tsunami, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra recalled him and made him the chairman of a committee tasked with developing a national! disaster warning centre and strategy.

"I'm not happy that I have made the right prediction," he said. "Nobody can accurately predict an earthquake; you can only assume from historical data," he added. He said big natural disasters occur in 80 year to 100 year cycles, apparently randomly across the world.

"If you speak out too much, forecast too much, you will get a lot of criticism, from government agencies, the tourism sector and so forth," he added. Explaining the northward shift of future epicentres, Dr Smith stressed: "This is no joke. I would like you to put this message out to S'pore and M'sia."

A researcher working on the hypothesis, who did not want to be named, said the research was on-going and final results were not yet ready.

Dr Smith said: "I have seen the simulations that indicate this and they look believable. From my own experience, it is possible."Only a few days ago, there was a 6.1 quake in the Andaman sea near the Nicobar islands, which is about 321.8km north of the Dec 26 quake.

So, this is an indication that the epicentre is moving north."

Gendering around us

Ziploc bags are Male. They are male because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

Copiers are Female. They are female because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up again. It's an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed.

Tires are Male because they go bald and are often over-inflated.

Hot Air Balloons are Male because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under them, and of course, there's the hot air part.

Sponges are Female because they're soft, squeezable and retain water.

The Web Page is Female because it's always getting hit on.

The Subway is Male because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.

The Hourglass is Female because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom.

A Hammer is Male because it hasn't changed much over the last 5000 years, but it's handy to have around.

The Remote Control is Female. Yes, you thought it would be male. But consider this -- it gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

GEMMA's vission is to embed the humanitarian spirit within the youths of Malaysia. our objectives are:

To provide a platform for the youth to be involved in humanitarian activities;

To provide knowledge and skills to the public especially the youth on constructive and positive reactions towards disasters;

To provide the best and most effective humanitarian assistance for civilians in any disasters, conflict, or underdeveloped/ impoverished communities; and

and To promote global humanitarian culture and ideology in Malaysia

GEMMA plans to achieve its objectives by creating and providing a platform for everyone espescially youths in humanitarian related activities and programs such as:

a. HUMANITARIAN WORKSHOPS

GEMMA has identified the basics and the dynamics of working in a humanitarian relief aid environment. Get trained by highly qualified trainers on emergency rescue where you can learn the basics of First Aid, Ascending and Descending (A&D), Search and Rescue (SAR), and
safety precautions and coordination.

humanitarian.

c. GEMMA Road Show and Humanitarian Campaign

One of our strategies of attracting youths here in Malaysia in humanitarian relief is by conducting a National Road Show and a Campaign on Global Humanitarian Plights across higher learning institutions all over the country. The theme of the campaign is "A TOUCH OF YOUTH, FOR THE SPIRIT OF HUMANITY". The objective of conducting this campaign is to educate the youths of Malaysia and make them aware of global issues such as world poverty, repercussions of war and conflicts, famine, and disasters. We would also like to educate these youths on what is humanitarian relief and the different aspects involved in it. With the backing of potential sponsors, we are hoping that we would be able to do this by early 2006. We are
initially planning to have ten of these road shows. Our minimum target of the road show is for GEMMA to be established in the universities and colleges that we visit. We hope that in the future, GEMMA will have humanitarian volunteers from Universities and colleges all over Malaysia.

If anyones intersted to help out, please get back to me asap. you may
contact me at 016 929 8317, Max 012 6700 790 or Ellyne at ehlamin@yahoo.com.

South Korea Trip October 2005

No time to read the text? Just view the photos then...

During 12 - 15 October 2005, I was granted a great gift; a business trip to South Korea; the country of morning calmness. According to some sources, Koreans are descendant of god and bear (i don't know how). God makes them elegant and wise, bear makes them square and tough.

Jet-Lag:
I took a flight from KLIA, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia at 00:45 (12-october-2005) and touched down at Incheon, Korea on around 7:45 AM (12-October-2005). Even though I slept on the plane but yet I felt the jet-lag.

I finally understood what is jet-lag; it is due to the fact that air-stewardness try to wake you up at the wrong time to eat something.

Incheon Airport
The journey from Incheon airport to Seoul took around an hour. We were rushed to the hotel and was ordered to change into formal dress quickly because the traffic jam of Seoul, Korea is pretty bad.

But traffic jam is good for us because it provides opportunity for site-seeing. We weren't planning to go to office anyway!

Seoul City:
It is a great city, personally I have never seen any city that beautiful. Singapore is okay, Kuala Lumpur sucks. I am not good at describing cities, however in all, the combination of mountains, well planned city management and nice architecture of the buildings cater for a wonderful city.

Seoul City Buildings

COEX
The first exhibition we got into was the WCEC(World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention) 2005.
It was organized to enable collaboration between korean and chinese companies. As a result of such spirit, I actually encountered a few chinese speaking Korean.

Entering the tradeshow

Nothing great that I can remember except for the free lunches at 3rd floor.

For the first time in my life, I got to eat Korean food and of course kimchi; a free and cheap Korean-mandatory food made out of vegetable and some spicy source. In fact there are like 200+ types of Kimchi according to my tour guide for the D.M.Z (Demilitarized Zone)

At night, I was taken to eat the claypot rice which could be presented in many formats (vegetarian, beef and etc) It was hot and spicy and it cost me around RM40 for just one meal. Thankfully, the drinks and Kimchi was free and always is.

Eating normal noodles by the road side cost me around RM8 (2K won)

Civilized Culture
The best part about Korea is its civilized culture where it is filled with high moral values. Out of the total 48 millions population, 20 millions inhabited in Seoul. I saw people walking on the street at 11:30PM and still feel fresh because it feels like morning.

Central City - South of Seoul

I have a few arguments to serve as my basis for saying that Korean have high moral values.
1. Traffic System - the roads have no divider in the middle to separate east and west lanes. This is because they allowed for vehicles to take U-Turn at appropriate spots and thus having fixed divider would take that privilledge away. But due to their high moral values, no one actually takes short-cut at the wrong spot.
2. Crime Rate - People walk on the street up to 12 AM. According to some sources, the highest percentage for crime comes under the category of "drunk and fight", not much of robbery and theft which are usually carried out by foreigners. This could also due to the fact they Koreans are entitled for social subsidies.
3. Weather - the weather affects people's thinking and hence mindset. Everybody is having a clear conscience and direction in life. For obvious reason, people don't actually suffer from frustration and wrath related social illness, the weather gives one calm and steady bless. Also the weather makes them a stronger human being than other races, this is especially true comparing to Malaysian.
4. Patriotic - My tour guide for D.M.Z kept mentioning that South Koreans are proud of the subway systems, Ginseng, Korean girls and kimchi (a common Korean dish).
5. Being the "South" Korea - South Korean often compared themselves with the North Korean and is proud that democracy has taken them thus far.

With all these factors, I have no reason to doubt that South Korea is now an advance country and I think they deserve the place. According to my organizer Mr. Kim, South Korea had nothing 30 years ago, the Korean war destroyed everything and now they created a wonder.

Technology:
The big guys are Hyundai (whose founder is actually a North Korean), LG Digital, Samsung, SK Telekom and etc.

LG Digital the main sponsor for KES 2005

I have seen universities building robotics and etc. The apartment that I lived in (Co-op Residence) has got a LG Digital TV cum Computer monitor which allows me to watch T.V and also go online at the same time. This is the reason why 90% of population uses the Internet. This actually reflects how successful the telecommunication sector is. I think that percentage includes those who uses 3G for emails and some mobile ATM.

Korean Girl:
Korean girl gives me the impression of being too serious. They are elegant creature but I am just not sure how to attract their attention. The fact that they walk on the streets with such great self-esteem, I can't possible stop one and say "hi, how r you ?"

Nevertheless, Korean are actually very friendly, civilized and highly morale people. I felt that they have the right mindset for success and being patriotic. The good weather gives them the ground to have a positive thinking because cooler weather calms one down and hence no anger, hatred and jeolousy arises.

A Typical Korean Girl

The language:
My translator(Josh Jan) taught me a few things:
Gam Sa Hap mi da = Thank You
Je Song Hap mi da = Sorry
Ang nyang ha se yo = Hello
yue gi you = Excuse me
I love u = I love u

Korean likes to mention the word "hap mi da".. just like the japs who say "...gato.."

D.M.Z (Demilitarized Zone)
This is the most profitable official tourist attraction for the country. The D.M.Z is actually the border between North and South Korea, two nations separated by different ideologies; democracy and communism.

The D.M.Z is where both sides are not allowed to be having any armed military stationed. The government of South Korea encourages civilian to live near the D.M.Z where they work as farmer for living. Their annual income is USD100 according to my tour guide. The idea of having civilian activities is actually to encourge the process of reunification after the Korean war. The Olympic game was also another element of reunification.

North Korean digging tunnels by bombing through the stones.

The Korean war and its history has high impact on the Koreans. Both side are always ready to withstand attacks from one another. North Korea, being the pro-activist has always been plotting strategies to evade South Korea effectively. One of their weapon is to make use of tunnels digged underground via the means of explosive dynamite to allow for army invasion. (The border is only 1 hour drive from the capital city) Up to date, 4 tunnels had been located and the North Korean denied responsibility. Therefore, Korean men upon 18 years of age has to serve the country for a mandatory 2 years military training.

Conclusion:
Statue at the Trade Tower

I like South Korea because its people have the right mindset and attitude for life. In buddhism point of view, this is the most fundamental element for success. Having visited the country, I couldn't help but to remind myself to always maintain a great attitude for life and leverage on the Korean spirit.

Beautiful Heart
