Help WWF keep Brumas (our satellite-collared elephant) and her herd safe in Sabah !

Elephants are among the most intelligent creatures on earth and they are able to display remarkable family bonds and social lives. When elephants bump into a familiar herd, they will rejoice with loud trumpets through gestures such as a tilt of the head or flap of the ear.

In 2005, WWF- Malaysia and Sabah Wildlife Deparment set ou on an elephant satellite tracking project to place satellite collars on adult female elephants that are at least six feet tall and weighs approximately one tonne.

Recently, our ranges John Japil and Julian Herman tracked down a magnificent female whom we named “Brumas” after the plantation where we placed a satellite collar on her. I am pleased to report that Brumas and her family were seen enjoying a salad of grass and other tasty plants in a wildlife-friendly oil palm plantation in Brumas, Tawau.

The Borneo elephant is an umbrella species that play important role in maintaining the biodiversity of the ecosystem in which they live in. These mega gardeners are excellent seed dispersers that help regenerate our forests. As their diet includes forest fruits, these seeds pass through their digestive system and are deposited far and wide, thereby helping the spread of new plants and tress which serves as food and shelter for other wildlife in the area!

Borneo Elephants are good seed disperser

Borneo elephants includes their diet to forest fruits. The ingested seeds passed through their digestive system and are deposited far and wide, thereby helping the spread of new plants and trees which serves as food and shelter for other wildlife in the area.

These elephants, found only in Borneo, are shy and generally avoid people as much as possible. they are considered to be more gentle-natured than their Asian cousins in Peninsular Malaysia. As adults, these forest herbivores can eat up to 150 kg of vegetation per day, feeding mostly on palms, grasses and wild bananas. They also love durian and will rool the entire fruit - spikes and all - in mud, then swallow it whole !

The Borneo elephant currently falls under Schedule 1 of Sabah Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 which makes it a totally protected animal. Yet, there is still heart-breaking news of elephant deaths every year due to two primary threats which are forest conversions resulting in lost of habitat and human-elephant conflicts.

Don't you feel heavy holding this bucket ?

Someone told me this story yesterday.

A man approached his teacher and started complaining non-stop, he kept on and on, the teacher listened and didn’t attempt to interrupt him. At one point, the teacher gave him a bucket full of water. Without much hesitation, the man took the bucket, holding it and kept on complaining.

Not long after that, the man was exhausted and slowed down, the teacher intervened and asked “don’t you feel heavy holding this bucket full of water ?” The man replied “Yes, very heavy.” The teacher said “ then why don’t you put it down ?”

From then on, the man put down all his sufferings and continued with life.

As few as 500 tigers in Malaysia only - today

The tiger numbers in Malaysia have fallen by over 80% since 1950's - down from 3,000 to as few as 500 tigers today - due to poaching, habitat loss and or fragmentation and lost of their preys - such as deer and wild pig.

The world has already lost three sub-species of tigers: the Caspian, the Balinese and the Javan tiger - the South China Tiger is feared to have suffered the same fate since they have not been sighted for the last 30 years - the Malaysian tiger is 1 of 9 subspecies of tigers.

Today, tigers are rarely spotted and can mainly be found in the Belum-Temengor Forest Complext, Taman Negara and The Endau Rompin Complex.

The illegal trade in wildlife is the third largest form of organised crime in the world after the arms and drugs trades.

And tigers are losing homes - it is currently estimated that only 45% of Peninsular Malaysia is still forested.

WWF employs a team of tiger rangers around the world to fight poachers and protect tigers from other dangers.

Vegetarian and Vitamin B12

Taken from Tzu Chi's monthly distributed magazine 140 01/2012.

Vitamin B12 is important for nervous system such as brain, spinal cord, nerve and also for red blood cell. Long term deficiency will bring about side effects related to these parts of your body.

However, the amount which Vitamin B12 required by the body is not in large quantity and it can be stored in the body (for a longer time) and being reused.

If one is a lacto-ovo-vegetarian, one will have no problem with having enough Vitamin B12 because it is available from eggs, yoghurt, cheese, soya and etc.

According to ADA (American Dietetic Association), Vitamin B12 cannot be found from plant-based food sources. Therefore, for pure vegetarian, the following options must be considered.

1.) Consume food supplement.

Bee Pollen is a good choice of natural food supplement for Vitamin B12.

2.) Consume food and beverages which contain Vitamin B12 such as soya and breakfast cereal.

Phosphate Diet Control For Kidneys' Health

High level of phosphorus will greatly affect the kidneys. When kidneys fail, blood phosphate level increases. High blood phosphate levels absorb calcium from bones causing bones to become brittle and weak in the long term. High calcium and phosphate levels cause skin itchiness, joint pains as well as eye irritation.

Hence, foods that has to be taken minimally are:
  • Beverages - carbonated drinks, cocoa drinks.
  • Cereals & grains - bakery products which contain yeast/self - raising flour / baking soda.
  • Eggs (yolk) and cheese products.
  • Processed meats - burgers, sausages, patties, nuggets etc
  • Sauces and condiments - instant cooking powders/sauces, fish paste, sesame seeds, soup cubes, marmite/vegemite, peanut butter, dried shrimps and mushrooms
  • Dairy /milk products - especially skimmed milk powder
  • Fruits - dried fruits like raisins & sultanas.

Vegetables and fruits are to be consumed at appropriate portions and be cautious about fruits with high potassium level.

For more details, refer to NKF.

WWF-Malaysia’s Forest for Life Programme

Forests cover 30% of the Earth's surface and contain much of the biological diversity found on land – they harbour over two-thirds of known terrestrial species, many of which are threatened. As you read this, an estimated 13 hectares of the world's forest are lost. In the next 30 seconds, another 13 hectares will disappear. Within a minute, mankind succeeds in undoing 1,000 years of natural evolution. Read on to understand a little more about our Malaysian rainforests, and how YOU can help us change for the better.

WWF-Malaysia’s Forest for Life Programme aims to increase the coverage of forest protected areas, improve the management of production forests for the supply of sustainable timber, and restore degraded areas especially where there is need to maintain critical forest linkages.

Breast Cancer - It’s not just an old ladies’ disease

When young women get breast cancer it often spreads more aggressively, leading to tougher treatments and lower survival rates.
Add such age-specific issues as fertility, diagnosis during pregnancy, childcare, financial security… and breast cancer becomes a triple threat to young women.

But here’s the good news: When it’s caught in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate for women ages 20-39 is almost 90%. We think that¹s a pretty fabulous reason for every young woman to get proactive about her breast health.

Rethink Breast Cancer

Bad Investment Choice, IQ Can Be Trained Up!!

Refer to 'Billionaire willing to pay RM100K for young, high IQ and fair ovum donor'

You can train up good IQ, no need to look for it. But it will require time, just like building up your muscle.

IQ is just a state of mind, it is how you think and react.

High EQ people are passionate people, because their thinking are based on feelings.

High IQ people are the opposite.

One way to train up your IQ is to play computer strategy games.

Why ?

Because it will put you into training ground for the following scenario.
  • Forces one to solve a specific problem within a short period of time.
  • Forces one to solve a problem before you get up.
  • Forces one to think about strategies and solutions to problems on the spot.
  • Forces one to think within the scope of the problem.
  • Trains one to stay focus.
  • Trains one to be more patience.
  • Trains one to not to give up until you find a solution
  • Trains one to be innovative (in certain ways).
  • Trains one to think about best practices.
It is just like going to the gym.

Space Shuttle Next Version Unveils

This topic interests me because the universe is really under-explored and still a mystery to common science.

To suggest that extra terrestrials exist in this universe is sometimes an after thought, (at least for now), but no one can say for sure. Perhaps someone knows, like the lord Buddha (some more than 2,500 years ago) or other saints and mysterious people. Buddhism material acknowledges higher terrestrial existence, however the descriptions are limited (as far as I have researched).

According to world famous scientist Dr. Stephen Hawkings, he is not sure why only weirdos have witnessed UFO. But isn't there is something called confidential in the world, especially in the governments ?

To get a picture of how big the universe is ?

Check out this link
  • From planet Earth,
  • the next level up is the solar system.
  • Then 'Solar Interstellar Neighbourhood'
  • Then only 'The Milky way gallaxy'
  • Then 'Local Gallactic Group'
  • Then 'Virgo Supercluster'
  • Then 'Local Superclusters'
  • Then only 'Observable Universe'
Some Buddhism materials suggest that higher terrestrial existence is beyond our solar system. A world is consists of a Star (i.e The Sun) and its surrounding planets.

With today's technology, we can't even reach the Mars which is estimated to be around 54.6 million km from Earth when it is the closest.

The Sun is really just too big to handle already.

This suggests that the human body which is formed from earth, water, fire and air elements is a limitation when it comes to the concept of higher terrestrial.

Therefore, with this new version of space shuttle, it is expected to bring men to Mars by 2021 the earliest. Its first unmanned test flight is expected to be in 2017 from the Kennedy Space Center.

The new rocket, known as the Space Launch System (SLS), is more powerful than the giant Saturn V rockets that launched astronauts to the Moon.

We are still a long way from the Superman concept.

We need to move beyond the Solar system to check things out, please!

Captain America - From Childhood Hero To Hopes

I was borned in 1970(s).

Like many others, I grew up reading comic books such as spiderman, fantastic four and of course Captain America. Captain America was really popular when I was in my primary school, not sure why, I even had a costume of it; I remember.

Now, after 30 years, Hollywood finally made a film out of it and it is played by an actor younger than me.

Captain America; The First Avengers is a great movie, you should go and watch it. It comprises of mixture of drama, love story, fantasy and probably scientific hopes for mankind evolution.

The actors played their roles well, especially Hayley Atwell who plays Peggy Carter; love interest of Captain America.

Chris Evans performs well too, he is able to portray a sickly young man who understands pain and later being transformed into a 'superman' figure who demonstrated the great strength, compassionate and humanity. For some reasons, Evans has that kind of look. I think he is a great actor.

In terms of acting, my favourite is between Tommy Lee Jones (who plays Col. Chester Phillips) and Stanley Tucci (who plays Dr. Abraham Erskine). I think I will pick Tucci for the oscar.

Also, Hugo Weaving plays the villain really well, he is a very talented actor.

For my part, the entertainment values come more from Hayley Atwell. She is an absolute success in this movie; A+++.

This movie tells that love story in the oldies are much better, even though clouded by wars and etc. Love stories then were more pure and happy as contrast to today's complicated humanity.

The one thing I want to stress about is hope. I have a reason to believe that ultimately, all mankind should strive to improve themselves. If you are weak in one area, you should and can always strive to improve on that area. It is the answer to every questions in this human age. And if you mixed it with love, political wars, friendship, science, idealogy and humanity, it is called life.

Fundamentally, it parallels with religions which touch on the reincarnation focusing on the point that what lies ahead is for becoming a more superior beings. From Animal realms to human being realms to heavenly realms and so on and so forth. Means, if you are now a human, you don't really want to become a fish, you prefer to go up with higher intelligence capability. If you are a fish, you would most likely wanted to become a human being. So, the right path is always becoming a stronger and better beings with higher level of consciousness.

Also, I think there is something to cherish that the world has to wait for more than 30 years, in order for Chris Evans to be borned, and to play this role. To me, that is called amazing. Why don't they let me play the role ? You know what I am saying ?

You should watch it. Thumbs Up :D
