Gendering around us

Ziploc bags are Male. They are male because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

Copiers are Female. They are female because once turned off, it takes a while to warm them up again. It's an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can wreak havoc if the wrong buttons are pushed.

Tires are Male because they go bald and are often over-inflated.

Hot Air Balloons are Male because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under them, and of course, there's the hot air part.

Sponges are Female because they're soft, squeezable and retain water.

The Web Page is Female because it's always getting hit on.

The Subway is Male because it uses the same old lines to pick people up.

The Hourglass is Female because over time, the weight shifts to the bottom.

A Hammer is Male because it hasn't changed much over the last 5000 years, but it's handy to have around.

The Remote Control is Female. Yes, you thought it would be male. But consider this -- it gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know the right buttons to push, he keeps trying.

GEMMA is a youth based humanitarian organization. We will be organizing our organization's official press launch on the 18th November 2005 at the Putra World Trade Centre and will be officiated by YA Bhg Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. We have also invited officials
from various government and non government agencies such as The Ministry of Youth and Sports, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Ministry of Education and The UN to support our organization Launch.

we are looking for volunteers to assist this launch. We dont have much time and resources and hope that you all may be able to help in these departments:

1. Inviting and following up on guests to the launch (Urgent!!).
-expected number of guest: 150
-corporate sector
-Higher Learning Institutions
-NGOs and Youth groups

2. During the event day
-usherers
-decoration
-general helpers

GEMMA's vission is to embed the humanitarian spirit within the youths of Malaysia. our objectives are:

To provide a platform for the youth to be involved in humanitarian activities;

To provide knowledge and skills to the public especially the youth on constructive and positive reactions towards disasters;

To provide the best and most effective humanitarian assistance for civilians in any disasters, conflict, or underdeveloped/ impoverished communities; and

and To promote global humanitarian culture and ideology in Malaysia

GEMMA plans to achieve its objectives by creating and providing a platform for everyone espescially youths in humanitarian related activities and programs such as:

a. HUMANITARIAN WORKSHOPS

GEMMA has identified the basics and the dynamics of working in a humanitarian relief aid environment. Get trained by highly qualified trainers on emergency rescue where you can learn the basics of First Aid, Ascending and Descending (A&D), Search and Rescue (SAR), and
safety precautions and coordination.

Learn from experienced humanitarians the different aspects of disaster and conflict management, distribution of humanitarian aid, refugee and IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) care, trauma relief, needs assessment techniques, and many more. We hope to cultivate a
generation of dynamic and efficient humanitarians.

Our humanitarian expeditions is an activity that combines the adventurous experience of backpacking. With the soulful satisfaction of community based work. Travel and experience different and unique cultures, sceneries and people from places like Africa, Aceh,
South Asia, Philippines, Iraq, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, or wherever place that requires humanitarian assistance. Many areas in Malaysia too need alot of humanitarian assistance in places and communities that have been devastated by flash floods, String winds, and also
poverty.

Not only you get to travel, we will coordinate participants and volunteers of our expeditions with the vast scopes of humanitarian duties such as Emergency Rescue, IDP and Refugee care, or maybe even education and psychosocial programs. With GEMMA, anybody can be a
humanitarian.

c. GEMMA Road Show and Humanitarian Campaign

One of our strategies of attracting youths here in Malaysia in humanitarian relief is by conducting a National Road Show and a Campaign on Global Humanitarian Plights across higher learning institutions all over the country. The theme of the campaign is "A TOUCH OF YOUTH, FOR THE SPIRIT OF HUMANITY". The objective of conducting this campaign is to educate the youths of Malaysia and make them aware of global issues such as world poverty, repercussions of war and conflicts, famine, and disasters. We would also like to educate these youths on what is humanitarian relief and the different aspects involved in it. With the backing of potential sponsors, we are hoping that we would be able to do this by early 2006. We are
initially planning to have ten of these road shows. Our minimum target of the road show is for GEMMA to be established in the universities and colleges that we visit. We hope that in the future, GEMMA will have humanitarian volunteers from Universities and colleges all over Malaysia.

If anyones intersted to help out, please get back to me asap. you may
contact me at 016 929 8317, Max 012 6700 790 or Ellyne at ehlamin@yahoo.com.

South Korea Trip October 2005

No time to read the text? Just view the photos then...

During 12 - 15 October 2005, I was granted a great gift; a business trip to South Korea; the country of morning calmness. According to some sources, Koreans are descendant of god and bear (i don't know how). God makes them elegant and wise, bear makes them square and tough.

Jet-Lag:
I took a flight from KLIA, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia at 00:45 (12-october-2005) and touched down at Incheon, Korea on around 7:45 AM (12-October-2005). Even though I slept on the plane but yet I felt the jet-lag.

I finally understood what is jet-lag; it is due to the fact that air-stewardness try to wake you up at the wrong time to eat something.

Incheon Airport
The journey from Incheon airport to Seoul took around an hour. We were rushed to the hotel and was ordered to change into formal dress quickly because the traffic jam of Seoul, Korea is pretty bad.

But traffic jam is good for us because it provides opportunity for site-seeing. We weren't planning to go to office anyway!

Seoul City:
It is a great city, personally I have never seen any city that beautiful. Singapore is okay, Kuala Lumpur sucks. I am not good at describing cities, however in all, the combination of mountains, well planned city management and nice architecture of the buildings cater for a wonderful city.

Seoul City Buildings

COEX
The first exhibition we got into was the WCEC(World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention) 2005.
It was organized to enable collaboration between korean and chinese companies. As a result of such spirit, I actually encountered a few chinese speaking Korean.

Entering the tradeshow

Nothing great that I can remember except for the free lunches at 3rd floor.

For the first time in my life, I got to eat Korean food and of course kimchi; a free and cheap Korean-mandatory food made out of vegetable and some spicy source. In fact there are like 200+ types of Kimchi according to my tour guide for the D.M.Z (Demilitarized Zone)

At night, I was taken to eat the claypot rice which could be presented in many formats (vegetarian, beef and etc) It was hot and spicy and it cost me around RM40 for just one meal. Thankfully, the drinks and Kimchi was free and always is.

Eating normal noodles by the road side cost me around RM8 (2K won)

Civilized Culture
The best part about Korea is its civilized culture where it is filled with high moral values. Out of the total 48 millions population, 20 millions inhabited in Seoul. I saw people walking on the street at 11:30PM and still feel fresh because it feels like morning.

Central City - South of Seoul

I have a few arguments to serve as my basis for saying that Korean have high moral values.
1. Traffic System - the roads have no divider in the middle to separate east and west lanes. This is because they allowed for vehicles to take U-Turn at appropriate spots and thus having fixed divider would take that privilledge away. But due to their high moral values, no one actually takes short-cut at the wrong spot.
2. Crime Rate - People walk on the street up to 12 AM. According to some sources, the highest percentage for crime comes under the category of "drunk and fight", not much of robbery and theft which are usually carried out by foreigners. This could also due to the fact they Koreans are entitled for social subsidies.
3. Weather - the weather affects people's thinking and hence mindset. Everybody is having a clear conscience and direction in life. For obvious reason, people don't actually suffer from frustration and wrath related social illness, the weather gives one calm and steady bless. Also the weather makes them a stronger human being than other races, this is especially true comparing to Malaysian.
4. Patriotic - My tour guide for D.M.Z kept mentioning that South Koreans are proud of the subway systems, Ginseng, Korean girls and kimchi (a common Korean dish).
5. Being the "South" Korea - South Korean often compared themselves with the North Korean and is proud that democracy has taken them thus far.

With all these factors, I have no reason to doubt that South Korea is now an advance country and I think they deserve the place. According to my organizer Mr. Kim, South Korea had nothing 30 years ago, the Korean war destroyed everything and now they created a wonder.

Technology:
The big guys are Hyundai (whose founder is actually a North Korean), LG Digital, Samsung, SK Telekom and etc.

LG Digital the main sponsor for KES 2005

I have seen universities building robotics and etc. The apartment that I lived in (Co-op Residence) has got a LG Digital TV cum Computer monitor which allows me to watch T.V and also go online at the same time. This is the reason why 90% of population uses the Internet. This actually reflects how successful the telecommunication sector is. I think that percentage includes those who uses 3G for emails and some mobile ATM.

Korean Girl:
Korean girl gives me the impression of being too serious. They are elegant creature but I am just not sure how to attract their attention. The fact that they walk on the streets with such great self-esteem, I can't possible stop one and say "hi, how r you ?"

Nevertheless, Korean are actually very friendly, civilized and highly morale people. I felt that they have the right mindset for success and being patriotic. The good weather gives them the ground to have a positive thinking because cooler weather calms one down and hence no anger, hatred and jeolousy arises.

A Typical Korean Girl

The language:
My translator(Josh Jan) taught me a few things:
Gam Sa Hap mi da = Thank You
Je Song Hap mi da = Sorry
Ang nyang ha se yo = Hello
yue gi you = Excuse me
I love u = I love u

Korean likes to mention the word "hap mi da".. just like the japs who say "...gato.."

Brandon & Translator

D.M.Z (Demilitarized Zone)
This is the most profitable official tourist attraction for the country. The D.M.Z is actually the border between North and South Korea, two nations separated by different ideologies; democracy and communism.

The D.M.Z is where both sides are not allowed to be having any armed military stationed. The government of South Korea encourages civilian to live near the D.M.Z where they work as farmer for living. Their annual income is USD100 according to my tour guide. The idea of having civilian activities is actually to encourge the process of reunification after the Korean war. The Olympic game was also another element of reunification.

North Korean digging tunnels by bombing through the stones.

The Korean war and its history has high impact on the Koreans. Both side are always ready to withstand attacks from one another. North Korea, being the pro-activist has always been plotting strategies to evade South Korea effectively. One of their weapon is to make use of tunnels digged underground via the means of explosive dynamite to allow for army invasion. (The border is only 1 hour drive from the capital city) Up to date, 4 tunnels had been located and the North Korean denied responsibility. Therefore, Korean men upon 18 years of age has to serve the country for a mandatory 2 years military training.

Conclusion:
Statue at the Trade Tower

I like South Korea because its people have the right mindset and attitude for life. In buddhism point of view, this is the most fundamental element for success. Having visited the country, I couldn't help but to remind myself to always maintain a great attitude for life and leverage on the Korean spirit.

Beautiful Heart

be a farmer and love your wife

Sometimes i would wonder that when can i get out of this rat-race life.

Not long ago, i have figured out the answer without timeline given. The day will come when I can finally pay back all debts and have a lot of cash in the bank for reserves. This is the day I will satisfy my partner during sexual intercourse with maximum effect, when there is no stress..keke!

anyway, there are times i thought about being a farmer and live a quiet life. Go to places that is humble and peaceful such as on top of the hill or far-away-paradise like Semporna, Sabah. Be a farmer, plant your own food and eat it, try to sell it. At night spend most of the time socializing and spiritual cultivation.

So here it is, for those share similar interest, there is a farming course for us.

CETDEM (Centre for Environment, Technology & Development Malaysia) will be organizing courses on organic farming/gardening. Courses are designed into 3 different categories, ranging from short course to in-depth course.

1) Weekend Short Courses on Composting on 2 Oct 2005, 3 - 5pm - This course tells you what organic gardening is and teach you how to make compost from kitchen, garden & market waste.
2) Course on Organic Kitchen Gardening on 22-23 Oct 2005 - This course is for those who want to know the theoretical and practical aspect on how to start an organic garden.
3) Course on Organic Farming on 4-6 Dec 2005 - This is an in-depth course on organic farming, suitable for converted or potential farmers, extension workers from government agencies or NGOs, organic food operators or organic compost/fertilizer manufacturer.

CETDEM will also be organising an organic farm tour to Cameron Highland on 8-9 Oct 2005.

Details please call 03-78757767 or go to www.cetdem.org.my/organic_farming
or email f21@cetdem.org.my

The national cancer society(NCSM- http://www.cancer.org.my )( we are not MAKNA! in case some of you think so J ) will be doing a cancer awareness weekend on the 16th – 18th of September 2005 ( Friday to Sunday) at the Bangsar shopping centre and I would like to request for volunteers for the days mentioned. Besides that, we may also need volunteers for the set up on the night of the 15th – late starting at 10 pm or so.
The jobs will entail simple things like running the 2 booths we are having there and giving out information- people who are cancer survivors or have had experience as cancer carers are encouraged to join us. (Besides the other partner organisations also there). I will most likely need volunteers in shift duties as below.
Also, if you have any exciting event that can help pull in the crowd and would like to offer your services… please also do get in touch with me…
These include
{ children’s activities-
{ singing
{ dancing
{ poetry recital

Life long employability

According to the DPM, graduates should now focus on life long employability and not life long employment.

Original Article

This is good thing... which would settle for questions like "why do you keep hoping jobs ?"

Then answer is that "I want to increase my employability..."

This is bad for companies for good for employees.

How much of your money goes to charity- The Star August 7th 2005

Original article

Important facts:
1. Charity organization like NKF only receives 10% the value which you paid.
2. NKF received like RM8k per month out of the 10 cents received from bookmark sales. For past 11 months, the total valued received is RM79K. (This is not really a big amount)
3. The are around five major charity groups which collect fund from public.
3a. NKF (National Kidney Foundation Fund)
3b. National Cancer Council (MAKNA)
3c. WWF Malaysia
3d. Kiwanis Down syndrome foundation
3e. Shelther Homes for Children.
4. MAKNA has around 40k contributors which contributed around RM1 million monthly.
5. Under the direct-debit program, money would be debited to the foundation first before being paid to solicitors like Sharity Greetings(M) and Asian Direct Support.
6. NKF official said 30% of deductions went to Asian Support Direct for overheads in the first four months of the programme, with another 10% to Sharity Greetings to maintain the database of donors. For every month after that, Sharity Greetings receives 10% of the donors' contributions.
7. Granton and Appco are both part of the Cobra Group, a direct marketing company based in Britain and Australia. Appco operates Asian Support Direct as full subsidiary.
8. Related law:
The Societies Act 1966, he said, required any organisation registered under the Act to obtain approval from the Registrar to collect money from the public.

--------------What do I learn ------------------------
1. At least I know how cross-marketing collaboration works.
2. Not all money goes to the fund but at least we are providing jobs as well.
3. Don't take things for granted, even maintaining the fund requires funding.

Life is painful

Everything is associated with positive and negative energy.

Being nice is also painful because of the following problems:
1. Not appreciated.
2. Being manipulated or make used of.
3. Not achieving objectives.
4. Get into a lot of misunderstanding and dispute.

However, depending on mindset, it is still worth it for me. There are many times I vowed not to do anything that is related to human or people, because I was deeply disappointed with the response. Nevertheless, every morning I worked up and was recharged again, I want to deal with human being again. To me, it is worth it and that is the beauty which balances off the pain.

Therefore, it is appropriate to “eat like poor man, stay healthy” – Yin & Yang

Don't ever give up on other people, for they are also having the same pain as you would. You have the power to make a difference.

NCSM is looking for volunteers

Dear All,
NCSM (Not MAKNA :-)) is looking for volunteers. The details are as below. Please contact Adeline or Anne and join in to help make our campaign a success.
Thanks
Brian
As usual The National Cancer Society will be running the annual Cancer Awareness Week in September. This time, the week will be from 12-18th Sept. There would be exhibitions , info booths and awareness programs in different malls in KL. Also, there will be schools, companies, banks, embassies etc who will be participating in the Wear Yellow Day which is on Friday, 17th where participants make a donation and don a Yellow ribbon to show their support for cancer!
In conjunction with these, this time around we will be running a competition with the wristbands during the CAWeek. So far, we have our wristbands that sell at all Starbucks outlets all over Malaysia But for the Yellow week, the contest will be targetted at those who purchase a band and thus become eligible to participate in this contest.
So we need volunteers on 6th and 7th (Saturday& Sunday) August-this weekend-to help insert the contest cards into small packages. We have 30000 cards to be inserted!! The staff will be there from 10am- 5pm but those who can come need only to offer the time they can spare and what is convenient to them.
So will need loads of volunteeers...as they say.." more hands make light work".

If you can help, call me or Anne at 03-26987300/26917300. Even if it is
a few hours that you can spare, we'd be thankful and appreciative.
Your time and efforts for these projects is greatly appreciated and will
surely help us in the success of our September Cancer Awreness Programs.
Thanks
Adeline

fwd email: Mars is going to be a second moon of earth for a day

If you give up when it's winter, you will miss the promise of your spring, the beauty of your summer, fulfilment of your fall.

Mars is going to be a second moon of earth for a day. NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN. The Red Planet (MARS) is about to be spectacular! This month and next,Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens again. The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the> moon) the brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. By August 27, Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot.

At the beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m. and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m. by the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter throughout the month. Share this with your family, friends, children and grandchildren.

fwd email: fake appeal

Guys.. I think this is faked one!

Just take note of the pattern and don't waste time in the future.

A couple of days ago, my daughter, she's 6years old, her name is Fatima.Well, she was playing on the street, in front of our house, and then out of no where, this car came out and crashed into her!

I was so frightened and angered at the driver, but it ended out to be, that the drivers brakes had been shot, and he wasn't able to stop.Luckily, my daughter, was able to avoid death, but she is in very serious condition. Right now, as I speak, she's in the hospital, but the thing is,she has a serious injury. It's internal bleeding, and it's bad to say,but we don't have any health insurance, and we don't have enough money to pay for the operation.

So I made a deal with a company, BCC inc and they told me, for>every person that will foward this email, they will donate 3 cents to>the operation.>>THIS IS NO JOKE. We attached encoding, that tracks how many times>this message is fowarded. SO PLEASE, FOWARD THIS LETTER TO EVERY PERSON>ON YOUR LIST.IT WILL BE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

fwd email: Don't ever take panadol

DON'T TAKE PANADOL AND PANADOL ACTI FAST AND PANADOL SOLUBLE (ESP.PPL = HAVE GASTRIC).

FYI... ....One real story from a guy... My husband was working in a hospital as an IT engineer, as the hospital is planning to set up a database of its patient. And he knows some of the doctor quite well.

The doctors used to tell him that whenever they have a headache, they are not willing to take PANADOL (PARACETMOL). In fact, they will turn to Chinese Herbal Medicine or find other alternatives. This is because Panadol is toxic to the body, and it harms theliver.

According to the doctor, Panadol will reside in the body for atLeast 5 years. And according to the doctor, there used to be an Incident where an air stewardess consumes a lot of Pnadol during herMenstrual as she needs to stand all the time. She's now in her early 30's, and she needs to wash her kidney (DIALYSIS) every month.

As said by the doctor that whenever we have a headache, that's because it is due to the electron/Ion imbalance in the brain. As an alternative solution to cope with this matter, they suggested that we buy 1 or 2 cans of isotonic drink (eg.100PLUS), and mix it with drinking wateraccording to a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2 (simply, it means one cup 100plus,one cup water. or 2 cups water).

Me and my husband have tried this on several occasions, and it seems to work well. Another method will be to submerge your feet in a basin of warm water so that it brings the blood pressure down from your throbbing head.

As Panadol is a pain killer, the more Panadol you take, the Lesser would be your threshold for pain (your endurance level for pain). We all will fall ill as we aged, for woman, we would need to go through childbirth. Imagine that we had spent our entire life popping quite a substantial amount of Panadol (Pain Killer) when you need to have a surgery or operation, you will need a much more amount of general anesthetic to numb your surgical pain than the average person who seldom or rarely takes Panadol.

If you have a very high intake of Panadol throughout your life (Migraine, Menstrual cramps) it is very likely that normal general anesthetic will have no effects on you as your body is pumped full with Panadol and your body is so used to pain killer that you would need a much stronger pain killer, Morphine?? Value your life, THINK b4 you easily pop that familiar pill into your mouth again. Please send this to people you care about.

Tom Cruise’s recent interview with Matt Lauer expressed concern over drug’s side effect.

Well, at least try not too :)
